The Village Public Telephony (VPT) program seeks to ensure that every citizen of India has access to telecom services. The Government has set a target of providing a public phone in every village by December,2002.

        There are 6,07,491 revenue village in India Under the VPT program, public phones have been installed in 5,02,987 villages. The remaining 1,04,504 villages are to be covered by December,2002.
